ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
For his second exhibition in our space, the Madrid artist GVIIIE presents a series of acrylics on board that use a selection of human faces he has been capturing over the last few months, as the model. These are originally photographs and then transferred to a sketch to execute a pictorial reinterpretation, in the city of Madrid, as well as in Lithuania and Germany.
Thus, the darker areas of the face defined by the features of the various models, allow the artist to carefully work on the textures created by the different black, brown and purple shades. Depending on the model, these color gradations vary in surprising but familiar ways while also recalling the importance of the figure of the artist one who observes and then represents what his gaze gathers with certainty and uniqueness. Additionally, GVIIIE's desire to capture the sharpness of the image with acrylics is explained by the influence of his professional experiences in the field of audiovisual production.
An influence that was already perceived in 'Living Natures' and that is even more relevant in his second exhibition, is the the plasticity that his paintings reveal, and moreover, the search for the ideal image - which can be found in that intermediate space in which creators linger and does not belong to the real or virtual.
GVIIIE was born in the Madrid neighborhood of Prosperidad and has always been drawing. He quickly abandoned drawing classes but not the tools which he informally used and self-taught on a daily basis. Starting with graffiti during adolescence, he studied at the School of Art 10 after not being selected in Fine Arts and ceases all artistic activity momentarily. In 2013, he finished his film studies at the University of the Arts in London and returned to Madrid.
Shortly afterwards, he reunites with the walls and begins to develop his neo-rupestrian style without yet achieving a stable work discipline. At the same time, he collaborates with the satirical newspaper Mongolia under the artistic name of Guille Joder and his animated short ‘Abayomi’ is shortlisted for the Goya Awards. He combines his activity in the comic and graphic novel with sporadic works ranging from the making of videos on TVE to artistic direction in ELLE Spain.
Currently, he paints walls almost daily. His last two individual exhibitions at La Causa Galería, in September 2018 (Naturalezas Vivas) and September 2019 (Internet Wound), were very well received by the public.
